How to boost Morale in Work

Our jobs can turn to be miserable and make us stressful because of lack of morale. This arises when our authorities scold and continuously interrupts us while in the process of executing our duties. Sometimes we find ourselves working with people who don’t want to co-operate when it comes to team work or may be the working environment conditions are terrible.

This will make you to have a negative attitude towards your job and you won’t give your best. Organizations make losses due to poor productivity which is as a result of lack of morale of its employees. Alexander A. Leighton defines it as ‘Morale is the capacity of a group of people to pull together persistently and consistently in pursuit of a common a purpose’.

It’s your satisfaction on your job and the general attitude you have towards your firm and your work that will determine the quality of output. If employees who are working as a team have high morale, their productivity will be high. This also makes the job not to be stressful to them. It motivates them. In an organization, it reduces labor turn over, wastage of resources and avoids strikes thus it keeps employees grievances at minimum.

Here is how you overcome low morale:

Providing Good Working Conditions-This includes provision of health services, employees safety, welfare services, regulation of working hours, proper wage policy etc which will help to create job interest among the employees.

Enlarging the Job-If there are many departments of the same work created by the organization, then the employees won’t feel demoralized since they will be rotated frequently to various departments hence learning new skills pertaining to those departments.

Praising employees-If employees are praised by their seniors about their job performance levels, they will have a sense of belonging and importance. This motivates them.

Freedom of Employees-Employees should be given freedom in their jobs. They will be performing their work with confidence.

Good treatment of employees by their authorities-If their authorities continuously interrupt them when they are performing their job, they will have negative attitudes towards them. The authorities should not abuse the employees as this lowers their respect which in turn leads to demoralization. The authorities should respect the employees and treat them kindly.

Provision of Financial and Non Financial Incentives-If employees are assured of job security, given employees benefits, their social status recognized, credited for the work done, etc they will be satisfied with their jobs.

Allowing Employees to Participate in Management-This is the most effective way of making employees to work better and to eliminate negative attitudes towards their work. It will create confidence and sense of belonging.

Solving Employees Grievances-If the management department that is concerned with employees listens and solves their grievances, then the employees will have high morale.

Proper Promotion of Employees-If employees are promoted without any prejudice, they will not have a negative attitude towards their job and the organization. This will increase their morale.
